My name is Ed Crumpton and I'm a artist based in the South-West, England, UK. I am looking for a UK-based chartered structural engineer (with PI insurance) to support the delivery of Quay Sounds, an interactive public art sculpture commissioned by North Devon Council as part of the Flourishing Barnstaple programme.
The sculpture involves two horn-like copper forms (approx. 1.8m and 1.4m high, see attached photo) with a (stainless) steel internal frame, anchored into a concrete pad (installed by council contractors).
This is the scope of Work:
- Review provided drawings (Rhino, exploded views) and material details. - Confirm the suitability of using steel vs stainless steel for the internal frame. - Assess the copper cladding shell and advise on fixing point suggestions. -- Design of internal structural frame (steel/stainless) to meet safety requirements. -- Design of base plate and fixings into a reinforced concrete base.
Provide structural calculations and report in line with Eurocode standards (EN 1990, EN 1991, EN 1993, EN 1997).
Advise on the best method to attach the structure to the floor (anchoring/fixings).
Specify materials to ensure a 20-year design life (including considerations for marine exposure, corrosion, vandalism, and thermal expansion). I am particularly concerned about people jumping and swinging from it.
Provide signed documentation with Professional Indemnity insurance suitable for submission to North Devon Council.
Important Notes:
Copper cladding is non-structural, but advice is needed on its attachment method to the frame. I have looked this website for more help in finding proper fixing point on a copper roof - https://copper.org/applications/architecture/arch_dhb/arch-details/basic_details/fasteners.php
The foundation design is excluded (the council will provide this).
I'm looking for a reference for UK-based engineers to ensure reassurance.
Deliverables:
Structural calculation report and compliance certificate.
Advice on structural frame material, anchoring, and copper reinforcement.
Anchorage load data for council contractors.
Budget & Timeframe:
Looking at budgets of £1,000–£2,000 based on scope and experience.
Delivery: ideally within 2 weeks of posting, latest 19th September.
