We are seeking a designer with strong experience in low-carbon building services to support a heat decarbonisation project. The building is a multi-storey healthcare facility in a town centre location. It currently operates with gas boilers and direct-fired water heaters, all of which are end-of-life.
The client’s objective is to significantly reduce fossil fuel use by introducing a cascade heat pump solution (air-source and water-source), supported by buffer vessels and integrated with existing distribution systems. Due to site constraints, full removal of gas is not feasible; therefore, a hybrid arrangement with retained boilers as backup is anticipated.
Key surveys and feasibility work have already been completed, including optioneering of suitable low-carbon options and confirmation of electrical capacity. The next step is to progress the project through the design stages, with a single designer retained across all phases.
Scope of Work
The commission is divided into three RIBA stage packages:
Stage 1–2: Preparation & Concept Design
Review feasibility outputs and schematic layouts provided.
Develop the preferred option into a concept design.
Confirm plant space planning (roof and plantroom constraints).
Identify any additional surveys or investigations required.
Stage 3–4: Developed & Technical Design
Produce developed designs, schematics, and schedules.
Coordinate with structural and electrical inputs (roof load checks, switchboard integration).
Address noise, planning, and operational considerations.
Provide detailed technical design suitable for tender.
Stage 5–6: Construction & Handover
Provide design support during installation, including responses to technical queries.
Attend progress meetings as required (remote acceptable).
Support commissioning, testing, and final sign-off.
Provide as-built information and O&M content.
Deliverables
Design drawings and schematics (CAD/Revit or agreed format).
Plant and equipment schedules.
Integration notes for BMS and controls.
Design risk assessments.
Supporting documentation for funding and compliance.
Requirements
Proven experience in low-carbon building services design, particularly cascade heat pump systems.
Ability to work to RIBA stages and produce clear technical deliverables.
Familiarity with healthcare or similarly complex building environments desirable.
