The Southlake Independent news magazine is seeking an editor for our new digital-only news publication.
In this part-time role, you will work closely with the editor-in-chief to coordinate local news coverage in Southlake by working with freelancers, interacting with stakeholders in the community, and facilitating coverage of news, sports, and entertainment. You’ll also be responsible for writing a handful of short feature stories each week.
Consider applying if:
You’re a strong writer and proofer, and can succinctly distill messages for disparate audiences, including social media, email, and a news magazine.
You’re facile working with and/or learning digital tools/platforms/apps, including Google Workspace, MailChimp, WordPress, Facebook, Instagram, Slack, Airtable, and RSS feeds
You’re thorough, organized, detail-oriented, and believe in the value of local news.
What you’ll do
As the Editor for The Southlake Independent, you’ll …
Aggregate, review, and post content to the CMS from Airtable
Work closely with writers to ensure coverage of topics is accurate and timely
Facilitate communication between staff, writers, and stakeholders in the community
Curate content for the newsletter, website, and social media channels
Support special projects/events with research and reporting
Who we’re looking for
Here’s what we’re looking for in an ideal candidate:
A strong willingness to dive in and get your hands dirty. This is a new venture that will have hiccups, so an adaptable personality is a must.
Excellent organization and time-management skills, and the ability to work on deadlines
Clear communicator who can effectively take direction and give feedback
Experience as a writer and editor/proofer. (Project management background a huge plus.)

Here’s what else you should know:
$2,000/monthly, with a minimum of 20 hours worked each week
Our production schedule requires you to coordinate, review, and aggregate content for up to 4 hours daily, Monday - Friday. Otherwise, you set your own schedule.
Work from anywhere but stay in touch via Slack, Gmail, and potentially Zoom.
