Pageant on Paper is a collaboratively made 9m x 1.5m drawing celebrating great women past and present.
Background to the project: We began creating this artwork Pageant on Paper, with the community during a festival residency back in 2018. The event facilitated story exchange and shared discovery of women’s stories. The project was inspired by learning about a little known inspirational theatre designer, Edith Craig, and her work directing the suffrage play ‘A Pageant of Great Women’. Our project similarly aims to encourage the discovery of great women past and present and facilitate discussion around female role models.
Where we are now: Recent Arts Council funding has enabled this valuable project to continue to grow and engage new audiences. We are due to complete the drawing in November 2021 following a series of workshops with organisations and community groups.
Where we are going: We have funding to transform this into a free interactive online artwork, with recordings and pop-up creative text about the women included in the drawing. The digital platform will achieve longevity for the piece and everyone’s contributions as well as provide an inspiring learning environment for visitors.
Job description:
The web developer will be responsible for creating and building a custom website to house and make interactive our Pageant on Paper artwork. To turn the 9m x 1.5m paper drawing into a digital artwork with clickable interactive elements which is optimised for mobile and desktop users. Each woman on the drawing (approx 350 women) will either need to be vectorised, and turned into an SVG, or SVGs representing interactive areas on the page will need to be created for each woman. The web developer will create a website user experience where visitors can see the whole image of the work, navigate across the image and zoom into areas to view details of the drawing. The developer will make it possible to hover over and select that figure to reveal a pop-up information box with a 25-word caption about that individual. To embed the audio recordings/soundscape into the artwork. To allow a user to search across all women on the site. Maximise the audience of the website by search engine optimisation. The developer will also create other basic pages on the site, e.g. about the project, contributors, and contact information.
