Objective: Create a user defined financial market index from equities that can be updated from Excel and displayed in a chart that represents accumulative % change over the period.
Example: Creating an index that represents the technology sector for the London Stock Exchange (using the top 10 highest market cap tech companies) and comparing it with a benchmark I.E the FTSE100.
The tickers of the stocks used to get the data could be: HLMA,RSW,SXS,SPT,OXIG,DSCV,KETL,MIDW,BVC,TTG,GHH,TCM
I would look at updating this monthly, I would therefore select monthly and take the last 20 years and download the data: https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/quote/HLMA.L/history?p=HLMA.L
I would need this repeated with all the tickers listed above. I would then need a value that represents all 10 tickers and put in a chart that measures % change over the 20 year period (Some stocks may not be 20 years old, so whatever the max is that can account for all of them)
I would then, on the same sheet and line chart, have the FTSE100 historical data compared.
I have tried to do this myself, representing just 1 stock and the accumulative percentage changes, and it never adds up properly to the real life % change. I believe I am failing to implement this properly: https://towardsdatascience.com/most-people-screw-up-multiple-percent-changes-heres-how-to-do-get-them-right-b86bd6ef4b72
I would like to do this with many sectors across so a default template and instructions would be required. I may also choose to use weekly or even daily data instead of monthly.
I will have more jobs in the future so I hope we can develop a long-term working relationship. This will likely include some more complex stuff like macros and auto updating databases.
