Expected duration: 1 - 6 months The potential project is for a not for profit heritage steam railway based in Worcestershire.
There are currently four major databases known to be in use; an online staff database (memberships and staff competencies for volunteers that staff the railway), a Charitable Trust database (donors and appeals), a Shareholder database (for the owners of the railway) and various email distribution lists held by Marketing and Events. There is significant overlap between these databases and large amounts of duplications, thus the concept of creating one central database for the railway is being promoted. The aim is to avoid duplication of records, enable the storage of more accurate and comprehensive data without duplicating the effort of keeping the data current or making unnecessary contacts with individuals.
Data held will encompass all individuals whether they be volunteers, members, paid staff, shareholders, donors, customers etc, etc and will provide the required data processing capability such that all relevant departments can achieve their needs.
The development of the current online database has been over a period of 15 years or so and is written in PHP/MySQL, hosted on a LAMP server. The current plan is for any new unified database to be operated in the same way.
