We are looking for video ESL (English for speakers of other languages) conversation teachers to teach South Korean learners of English. Please note this role is only open to English native speakers from the following countries: U.K. U.S.A. Canada Australia New Zealand This is because these are the main countries which South Korean people consider English native speaking countries. Among these countries, it doesn’t matter where your accent is from, so long as you can speak in a very clear way and avoid using confusing words or idioms (in other words, ability to stick to “mainstream international” English).
Classes will take place on our new app (available on Android and iOS). This is free to download for all teachers and students. Students pay a fixed fee per class. The app has been in planning, development and testing for a year, and this week we will finally be submitting it to the Apple App Store and Android Play Store. The app has a profile page and scheduling and booking system, and for the classes it has an online whiteboard and video/audio chat. You need to do classes on a mobile device. Tablets might work but desktop/laptop won’t unless you can run mobile apps on them.
The pay is listed as $10 per hour, but in reality it is slightly more. Each class is 10 minutes long, but is within an 11 minute slot (to allow for any connection delays at the beginning). For each class you successfully teach, you will receive 1/5 of an hour’s pay (so 5 x 10 minute classes counts as 1 hour). Pay will be calculated as the fixed rate rather described here, rather than using a work-tracking clock. In other words, the number of classes you taught x $2. Pay will be sent once every two weeks.
You can choose the hours you work. The way the service works is, you post available lecture times that you are available (11 minute slots), and then students can see these times on the app and book you if they want. There is no guarantee of students booking your classes but hopefully. You can also choose to “appear online” on the app, so if a student logs in and doesn’t have a scheduled class, they can request a class with you immediately. Think of the app as a little bit like Uber for English conversation practice.
As we just started, and we are based in Korea, we are currently aiming our service at Korean learners of English. So the app’s time system is based on Korean time (UTC+9) and there are likely to be the most students online during the afternoon and evening in Korea. Nonetheless, many of our students are overseas, so 24 hours a day there are likely to be opportunities.
Essential: Must be from either the U.K., U.S.A., Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Reliable, punctual, friendly, patient personality. Very clear speaking and ability to express yourself verbally to a non-native English speaker. High-level English ability. Presentable appearance.
Desirable: Experience of teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESL), either in class or online. Any kind of ESL teaching qualification. University/College degree. Experience with or knowledge of Korea, Korean culture and Korean people. Experience with or knowledge of East Asia, its culture and people. Korean language skills (even basic Korean skills will be an advantage).
If you feel you match our requirements and would like to be part of our team, doing a very enjoyable job with hours which suit you, please apply, sending your resume/CV. We plan to do video interviews in early September. Depending on how long the app review/publishing process takes, we hope to start in mid-September.
